In the Orient the concept of "reducing to the minimum" exists. For the flowers used in the tea ceremony, unecessary flowers and leaves are discarded, and then one considers whether the sense of the flower remains; or rather, whether one has brought out a stronger sense of the characeristicsof the flowers. This sense of minimalism is also present in tea ceremony's flowers、Japanese confection, Family crest, haiku, and haiga as well.
There are many famous painters such as Western paintings and Japanese paintings, but haiga has a small population. Haiga is originally in the flow of bunjin-ga, and it may be natural because it is positioned as a hobby of intellectuals such as scholars, monks, doctors, etc. There are few profesional painters.
I would like to introduce here one of the characteristics of this Japanese culture, the concept of "reducing to the minimum" , along with the English translation of Buson's haiku.

東洋の思想の一つに「引き算」があります。茶の湯で生けられる花は余分な枝や葉を落とし、それでもなお、その花らしさを残すことを目指します。いえ、削ぎ落としたがこそ、その花らしさの特徴を際立たせることができる、という考え方です。茶花、和菓子、家紋、俳句、そして俳画もこの思想の流れにあります。
ところで洋画、日本画などは多くの著名な画家がいますが、それに比べ、俳画家は見当たりません。俳画はもともと文人画の流れにあり、学者、僧侶、医者などの知識人の趣味という位置付けなので当然かもしれませんが、プロの画家はほとんどいません。この日本文化の1つの特徴である削落とし、引き算の思想を、蕪村の英訳の俳句と共にここに紹介したいと思います
