Background of the birth of Fudegraphy
筆グラフィーが生まれた背景
I have been designing English books with publishers for many years. One day, an American author asked me to write the title with a brush. At the time, I was creating the titles on a computer, but fortunately, I was used to using a brush because I drew ink paintings as a hobby. This first book sold very well, and since then, I continued to receive requests for titles written in brush calligraphy.
私は長年出版社と英語の本をデザインしてきました。そんな中、米国人の著者がタイトルを筆で書いてほしいとのこと。当時はコンピューターで作成してしていましたが、幸い趣味で墨絵を描いましたので、筆は使い慣れていました。この1冊目が売れに売れて、それ以来、筆文字のタイトル希望が続きました。
Incidentally, it's been a century since haiku spread around the world. There are now people all over the world who enjoy haiku. However, unlike paintings, haiku don't appear visually, so most people, including myself at the time, are unaware of the extent to which it has spread.
So if I turned my own haiku into calligraphy, displayed it like a painting, given it as a gift, or even painted it on a card to send while traveling, it would remain in a visible form.
So I came up with the idea of Fude(brush)graphy, a new type of letter art, in which Western characters are painted with a brush.
話は変わりますが、俳句が世界に広がって1世紀。今や世界中に俳句を楽しむ人達がいます。ところが俳句は絵と違ってビジュアルで出てこないため、当時の私を含め、その広がりの実体を知らない人たちがほとんどです。
それならば、自作の俳句を書道のようにし、絵のように飾ったり、プレゼントにしたり、また旅先からカードに描いて送れば、目に見える形に残ります。
それで筆で西洋の文字を描く、新しい文字アート、筆グラフィーを考えました。
Fudegraphy is a new type of word art. That is to write western-style characters with eastern-style pen. With hand-written characters at its core, this adds a vigor (ikioi) and a nature flow (nagare), not seen before. Using this simple pen, one can easily taste the joys of Fudegraphy.
In preparation for the International Haiku Symposium held in Tokyo in 2009, I published a book called "Fudegraphy," which depicts haiku from Basho's "Oku no Hosomichi" using Fudegraphy.
筆グラフィーとは、東洋の筆で西洋の文字を描く、新しい文字アートです。それは手書き文字をベースに、「勢い」や「流れ」という、今までにない感性が加わっています。それを簡単な筆ペンを使えば、世界の誰もが絵のような筆グラフィーを気楽に楽しめます。
2009年の東京で開催の国際俳句シンポジュウムに向けて、芭蕉の奥の細道の俳句を描いた"Fudegraphy"の本を出版しました。
